2022 Subaru Outback Review

2022 Subaru Outback

MSRP: $26,945 - $39,945

  • Seating and cargo space are both spacious.
  • There are many standard safety features.
  • Ride and handling are well-composed.
  • Excellent fuel efficiency

  • Optional distracting touch screen
  • The base engine is sluggish.

The 2022 Subaru Outback is placed at the bottom of the wagon class. The Outback’s poor rating is due to the segment’s limited size and the strength of luxury entries rather than any problems with the vehicle. Its higher suspension and plastic body cladding scream “active lifestyle,” yet behind the wheel, it seems more car-like.

Buyers may choose between a turbocharged or non-turbocharged four-cylinder engine, both of which come standard with all-wheel drive. A sturdy roof rack provides a convenient location for bikes or kayaks without the extra-tall stance of an SUV, allowing for simpler loading and unloading.

The Outback formula has proved so successful over the years that even luxury automakers have tried it: the Outback’s closest competitors are the Audi A4 Allroad and the Volvo V60 Cross Country, both of which start almost $20,000 higher.

Engine, Transmission, and Fuel Efficiency

2022 Subaru Outback comes with two flat-four engines: a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter as standard and a 260-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged as an option. Both are coupled to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that resembles an eight-speed gearbox to reduce irritating engine drones. All Subaru Outbacks, even the base model, come standard with all-wheel drive (except for the rear-drive BRZ sports coupe).

The Outback we examined with the standard engine had unremarkable acceleration and a lazily shifting transmission. Although the turbocharged version was noticeably faster, it was plagued by the same recalcitrant transmission. The standard engine in the wagons can tow 2700 pounds, while the turbocharged variant can pull 3500.

According to the EPA, the standard Outback will get 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The turbocharged model has a significant decrease in the economy, with ratings of 23 mpg city and 30 highway. The Legacy, on the other hand, offers more fuel-efficient powertrains.

Its base engine is anticipated to get 27/35 mpg city/highway, while the turbocharged version is expected to achieve 24/32 mpg city/highway. On a 200-mile real-world highway-fuel-economy route, we tested an Outback with each of these engines, and they all returned the same 28 mpg. In the same test, the sedan with the turbocharged four-cylinder scored 34 mpg.

What is the seating capacity?

The 2022 Subaru Outback is a five-seat wagon with four doors. The front seats are soft and supportive, and they stay comfortable after many hours of driving. Because of the Outback’s wide windows, visibility is great in all directions.

The back seats aren’t as comfortable as the front ones, but they have plenty of head and legroom. Taller passengers will sit comfortably in both rows, and children will find the rear seat to be very spacious. If you need even more sitting capacity, consider the three-row Subaru Ascent.

Front seats are manually adjustable and have cloth upholstery as standard. Genuine and synthetic leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with power adjustments, heated back seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

How many Child Car Seats?

The Outback comes standard with two full sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear center seat. This LATCH system is one of the most user-friendly and versatile.

Interior Quality

While the outside of this Subaru is tough, the interior is rather luxurious, at least on higher trim levels. In commonly touched areas, you’ll find cushioned surfaces and soft-touch plastics. The overall fit and finish are excellent, and the cabin effectively muffles the majority of road and wind noise. The dashboard is elegantly styled, and everything except the base model has a sleek tablet-like touch screen.

Cargo Space

The Subaru Outback’s cargo capacity is 32.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 75.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. That’s more than enough capacity for carrying bags, family luggage, or camping gear, and it’s much more space than any other wagon, including the Volvo V60 and Audi A4 Allroad. Standard equipment includes a manual liftgate.

Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Subaru provides two versions of their Starlink infotainment system in the 2022 Outback. The base versions come with a pair of 7-inch touch displays. The top screen controls the audio system, while the lower screen controls the climate, driving modes, and safety systems. There are a few physical buttons and knobs, making it simple to adjust settings on the go. This system is very simple, yet it is well-organized.

All other trims have a big 11.6-inch touch screen. This portrait-style display has better graphics and more audio and climate control capabilities. It also responds fast to inputs.

  • Standard infotainment features are dual 7-inch touch displays, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, two USB ports, Bluetooth, HD Radio, satellite radio, and four-speaker audio.
  • Infotainment features include an 11.6-inch touch screen, Navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot, two extra USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo.
  • Additional standard features include automatic temperature control and keyless entry.
  • Additional options include proximity keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof.

Should I Buy a 2022 Subaru Outback?

The Outback is an excellent combination of interior spaciousness, ride quality, fuel economy, and all-wheel drive capabilities. Its upscale interior and plenty of safety features are the cherries on top. The Outback is much more than a wagon; it is THE wagon.
