Overview

The 2022 Subaru Impreza ranks at the bottom of compact car rankings due to its lackluster and unrefined engine. Positives such as a roomy, feature-laden cabin and sure-footed handling are insufficient to justify its superiority to more well-rounded competitors. The 2022 Impreza is a decent, although unimpressive, small, reasonably priced vehicle and comes with standard all-wheel drive.

Subaru’s smallest car is available in sedan and hatchback body styles and is available with either a manual or continuously variable automatic transmission. The Impreza’s flat-four engine delivers sluggish acceleration regardless of transmission choice, but the stick shift is imprecise and not recommended.

Both the sedan and hatchback offer a practical interior and a smart infotainment system, and base models come with a variety of driver-assist features, although only with the CVT. The 2022 Impreza’s engaging driving characteristics and value proposition make it a decent option in its class. Still, its mediocre fuel efficiency and lack of refinement keep it at the bottom of our ranking.

What’s Newly Include in 2022

The new upgrades in the 2022 Subaru Impreza include the following features:

  • Sedan Limited trim is no longer available.

Engine, Transmission, and Fuel Efficiency

The 2022 Subaru Impreza is a hare tortoise with a four-cylinder engine producing 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. Of course, all-wheel drive is standard. With a limited low-end punch, the sedan and hatchback need a lot of goading to keep the engine where it needs to be in order to produce power.

The five-speed manual transmission in our Impreza Sport sedan was less sluggish than the CVT in our long-term Sport hatch, but we prefer the automatic since the manual is notchy and inaccurate. You’ll be impressed with the fuel efficiency of any Impreza equipped with a CVT. If you choose the manual transmission, you’ll be visiting your local gas station more frequently.

According to the EPA, the most efficient Impreza gets 28 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, while the least efficient model—a hatchback with a manual transmission—gets 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. In our real-world highway fuel-economy test, our manual-equipped Impreza Sport sedan achieved 30 mpg. In comparison, the nonhybrid Toyota Corolla scored 41 mpg with an automatic transmission.

What is the seating capacity?

Both the sedan and hatchback versions of the Impreza seats five passengers. Both body types provide the same amount of head- and legroom up front and in the back, so choosing between them is pointless. Second-row seats can accommodate even tall people without feeling cramped.

How many Child Car Seats?

The rear outboard seats have two full sets of LATCH connectors, and the rear center seat has a tether anchor. Because of this, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated this LATCH system Good+, indicating that it’s one of the simplest and most flexible options out there.

Interior Quality

The cabin of the Subaru Impreza 2022 is well-built, and it has a modern, fresh appearance. Lower trim levels have acceptable quality, but you’ll notice a lot of hard plastic. On the other hand, upper trims are more luxurious, including leather seats and a wider range of soft-touch materials.

Cargo Space

The 12.3-cubic-foot trunk of the Impreza sedan is one of the smallest in the compact car. However, the trunk opening is spacious and deep, making it simple to load or unload anything you’re hauling. The Subaru Impreza hatchback has 20.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the second-row seats, which fold down to generate 55.3 cubic feet.

If you often carry a lot of things, this body type is the obvious option. The hatchback Impreza offers more cargo space than many subcompact SUVs and even a few small SUVs.

Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The Impreza does not disappoint when it comes to in-car technology. Thanks to a well-organized menu system, the standard 6.5-inch touch screen, and the optional 8-inch touch screen are both simple to use. The infotainment system has clear graphics and responds fast to your inputs.

The driver has easy access to large, clearly defined controls for climate and volume adjustments. Additionally, the center stack has dedicated physical buttons for infotainment shortcuts, including radio, home screen, and smartphone applications.

  • Standard infotainment features include a 6.5-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a four-speaker stereo.
  • An 8-inch touch screen, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, voice recognition, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, and two rear USB ports are among the available infotainment features.
  • A 4.2-inch driver information display, push-button start, automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, and a moonroof are all available features.

Should I Buy a 2022 Subaru Impreza?

In addition to standard all-wheel drive, the 2022 Subaru Impreza provides a pleasant ride and excellent handling. It also features a spacious interior and simple technology. However, its underpowered engine keeps it from becoming the greatest small vehicle.
