Overview

The 2022 Subaru Ascent is placed at the bottom of the list of midsize SUVs. While the Ascent comes standard with a long list of features and plenty of passenger space, it is not nearly as fun to drive as many class competitors.

The three-row 2022 Subaru Ascent with standard all-wheel drive and ample passenger capacity will be a good choice for those who have a growing family. Driver assistance features are standard on every mid-size crossover, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assistance.

The Ascent features a comfortable ride and fully configurable second-row captain’s seats, but its third row is smaller than some competitors—and certain desired features are reserved for higher trim levels.

  • The Onyx Edition trim level has been added to the lineup.

Engine, Transmission, and Fuel Efficiency

The 2022 Subaru Ascent’s all-wheel-drive technology, which is a company trademark, makes it ideal for four-season family road journeys. Its 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine provides medium acceleration. The Subaru’s continuously variable automatic transmission contributed to a loud ride during our test. The gearless gearbox was generally responsive and stable.

The Ascent also features paddle shifters placed on the steering wheel for those who prefer better control over the transmission. The Ascent is estimated to get 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. In both categories, those who choose the top-tier Limited and Touring versions will lose one mpg.

Still, the Ascent boasts above-average EPA estimates and verified the latter in our 200-mile real-world test. On our route, the top-of-the-line Ascent Limited got 26 mpg, matching its EPA highway rating. Despite their lower government ratings, competitors like the Chevy Traverse and Honda Pilot were more efficient.

What is the seating capacity?

In its standard configuration, the Ascent’s three rows can accommodate eight people. The Subaru’s seating capacity is reduced to seven when the second-row bench seats are replaced for the available bucket seats. The first two rows of seats provide plenty of legroom, and adults can sit in the third row on short trips with comfort.

How many Child Car Seats?

There are three full LATCH connector sets. The second-row outboard seats on the Ascent have two sets, and the center seat in the second row has an upper tether and a lower anchor. A full set of connectors and higher tethers are also included for the third-row seat on the driver’s side. This LATCH system is one of the most user-friendly and versatile.

Interior Quality

The interior materials aren’t luxurious, and they are pleasant and simple to clean, which should be an advantage for families with busy lives. Upholstery made of cloth is standard. However, the stain-resistant cloth is included in the Premium trim, and water-rescuer fabric seats are included in the Onyx Edition.

Cargo Space

For a mid-size SUV, the Ascent has a lot of cargo space. The third-row cargo capacity is 17.8 cubic feet; with the third row folded, it’s 47.5 cubic feet; both the second and third rows are folded, it’s 86.5 cubic feet. Standard features include a power liftgate and a compartment under the cargo area for storage.

Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

  • Standard infotainment features include the 6.5-inch touch screen, four USB ports, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and Bluetooth.
  • Infotainment features are an eight-inch touch screen, 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Navigation, Wi-Fi hot spot, and two USB ports in the third row.
  • Keyless entry and automatic tri-zone climate control are also included as standard features.
  • Other features include proximity keyless entry, remote start, and second-row climate controls.
