Overview

The 2022 Nissan Frontier receives a complete makeover, making it more competitive in the small pickup truck category. It features a well-constructed interior with comfy front seats, a comfortable ride, and some off-road capabilities. This car does not have an overall rating or score since it has not been completely crash-tested or reliability rated.

The 2022 Nissan Frontier has been the company’s first midsize pickup redesign for many years. Although it still shares certain bones with its predecessor and does not seem like the most modern car to drive, the changes are enough to be a serious competitor once again. It has a new design, a higher-quality interior, and a refined, efficient engine and transmission.

It’s not perfect, but neither is anything else in the category, and it offers a lot of features that could make it the ideal truck for your specific needs. The newly styled Frontier, with a futurist face and blisters fenders inspired by the first Nissan “Hardbody” small trucks, no longer appears like a throwback–its predecessor remained largely unaltered for 16 years.

Similarly, the interior of the current generation moves from dull to pretty damn beautiful due to a more attractive layout and additional features. A 310-hp V-6 engine is paired with a nine-spd auto transmission and rear- or four-wheel drive. Off-road lovers will certainly enjoy the Pro-4X model, which has a beefier suspension, an electronic locking rear differential, and other tough features.

Engine, Transmission, and Fuel Efficiency

While most small trucks provide a variety of powertrain choices (including diesel options for certain trucks), the 2022 Nissan Frontier just offers one: a 310-horsepower V6 engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Most critics agree that the engine is powerful enough for most driving conditions, but some wish it moved the vehicle with more verve. The transmission can be a little erratic at times, but it shifts smoothly.

Most compact trucks are much more fuel-efficient than this Nissan, but that’s because they have four-cylinder engines rather than V6. According to the EPA, the Real-Wheel-drive Frontier models score 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, while four-wheel-drive versions get 17/22 mpg city/highway. These ratings are nearly similar to those of V6-powered competitors.

What is the seating capacity?

In King Cab versions, the 2022 Nissan Frontier seats four passengers, and in Crew Cab models, it seats five people. The front seats are very comfy. Nissan’s Zero Gravity seats offer strong support, plenty of head- and legroom, and a high seating position, resulting in excellent forward visibility.

The Frontier’s back seats are small, as are the majority of vehicles in this class. Adults will have difficulty getting into the rear of King Cab versions. Crew Cab vehicles provide greater capacity, but most adults would still wish for more.

How many Child Car Seats?

There are two full sets of LATCH connectors for the rear seat. Tether anchors are also available for the rear center seat in Crew Cab versions.

Interior Quality

The new Frontier’s cabin replaces the previous model’s boring, low-rent cabin with something completely new. The interior of this Nissan now seems to be fresh and trendy, with an attractive design. The materials quality is standard for the class, with a combination of soft-touch materials and hard plastics.

Cargo Space

The Frontier King Cab has a 6-foot-1-inch bed, while Crew Cab versions have a 5-foot bed. The SV Crew Cab is the only model that has both bed lengths. Between the wheel wells, both beds are approximately 44 inches wide.

Most other compact pickup trucks have the same bed lengths (plus or minus an inch), but others have wider beds with 4 feet between the wheel wells. The rear seats on Crew Cab models flip up to offer extra storage space in the cab. Bed amenities like bed lights, an in-bed power outlet, and Nissan’s Utili-track system of adjustable tie-downs can be added to enhance versatility.

Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

As part of the redesign, the Frontier receives a new infotainment system. Standard touchscreen sizes are now 8 inches, with a 9-inch option also available. This makes it larger than other competitors. The user interface is simple and intuitive, with all controls easy reach.

Now that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard on this Nissan (they were previously optional), you can simply connect your phone to the system.

  • Two USB ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are all included as standard in the vehicle’s infotainment system, along with an 8-inch touchscreen display.
  • Infotainment features include a 9-inch touch screen for navigation, a 10-speaker Fender audio system for music, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and wireless device charging.
  • Keyless entry and push-button start are also included as standard equipment.
  • A sunroof, automatic climate control with dual zones, and remote start are also available.

Should I Buy a 2022 Nissan Frontier?

The 2022 Nissan Frontier will be completely redesigned, making it more competitive in the small pickup truck segment. The Frontier isn’t as capable as some competitors, but it has enough towing, hauling, and off-road capability, as well as a modern interior and user-friendly features, to please the majority of buyers. It may not be your first pick in the class, but the Frontier is worth a serious look for the first time in a long time.
