2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
MSRP: $55,700 - $79,800.Overview
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, like previous midsize Mercedes SUVs, offers cutting-edge technology, a spacious interior, and improved off-road capability. The majority of vehicles include two rows of seats, which are both comfortable and luxurious. A third row is offered as an option, but it’s just good for kids. The GLE’s dashboard is dominated by a wall of screens that contains a fully digital gauge display and an expansive view of the car’s infotainment system.
The base engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder, although a turbo inline-six and a twin-turbo V-8 are also available (although the V-8 will be offered in a limited supply this year). The GLE can be equipped with an adjustable air suspension that can provide additional ground clearance and help rock the SUV free from deep sand or mud for those who want to drive far from paved roads and civilization.

Engine, Transmission, and Fuel Efficiency
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class lineup has three engine options. The GLE350 is equipped with a 255-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, rear- or all-wheel drive (4Matic in Mercedes parlance), and a nine-speed automated transmission. The GLE450 adds standard all-wheel drive, a hybrid powertrain with a turbocharged inline-six, and a unique 48-volt electrical system that delivers 362-hp.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE580 is the most potent and premium non-AMG version. The 48-volt system is linked with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 to produce 504 horsepower. Every GLE-class vehicle can be equipped with cutting-edge air suspension technology that can lean into corners and even slide free if the driver gets trapped in sand or mud. Traditional steel springs and anti-roll bars are the basic setups.
When driven carefully, the technology may turn off the V-8 at high speeds while coasting or braking to a stop at lower speeds, allowing the 0.9-kWh battery to run the GLE580 as an EV for a short time. It has a lot greater thrust and consumes considerably less fuel. Surprisingly, the EPA rates the six-cylinder GLE450 as having the best fuel economy, with 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined. The four-cylinder GLE350 gets 19/26/22 mpg in the city, highway, and combined, while the GLE580 burns gas more quickly and gets 17/22/19 mpg.
The all-wheel-drive GLE350 4Matic returned 25 mpg on the 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, while the GLE450 4Matic returned 23 mpg. The GLE450 competes against the six-cylinder X5 xDrive40i in our fuel-economy tests, but the BMW comes out on top with a 28-mpg result.
