Review

There is only one trim standard for the 2021 BMW M5. A 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine provides power (600 horsepower, 553 lb-ft of torque). All four wheels are driven by an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M5 is robust, with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 producing 600 horsepower in base form. The number rises to 617 or 627 horses in the more track-focused Competition or CS versions, respectively.

Over the years, the BMW M5 has maintained an impressively adaptable character. The brand’s mid-size super sedan has stayed sufficiently elegant and modest for low-profile chauffeur service, even while technological developments have propelled it to awesome levels of performance.

According to the EPA, the new M5 gets 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. The M5 receives a styling update for 2021 and some infotainment upgrades and updated suspension tuning for the optional Competition kit. These improvements help it cope with its key competitors, including the Audi RS 7, Mercedes-AMG E 63 S sedan, and Porsche Panamera Turbo.

2021 BMW M5 Interior

The interior of the M5 is luxurious, with comfortable sport seats. Unlike many of its competitors, BMW has avoided the all-touchscreen route, making it easy to change the air conditioning or radio (via physical controls) while driving. The M5 features customizable ambient interior lighting, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable steering column, among other items.

BMW offers ventilated front seats with massage modes, heated rear seats, and four-zone automatic climate control. In terms of storage, the M5 has convenient cubbies in the cabin and a trunk that can hold six carry-on suitcases. The interior of the CS model is more race-inspired, with exclusive styling and badging and lightweight carbon-fiber front seats with significant bolstering. It’s also the first M5 with only four seats, with two bucket seats replacing the rear bench of the standard M5.

The M5’s dash features a 12.3-inch touchscreen that runs BMW’s new iDrive infotainment software. The driver controls it with a rotary knob in the center console. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and a Wi-Fi hotspot are included in the device. All models feature a Harman/Kardon audio system with 16 speakers and 600 watts of power and wireless device charging. The rear-seat entertainment system and 16-speaker, 1400-watt Bowers & Wilkins sound system are available for those who want a more luxurious experience.
