Review

A retuned suspension, more aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, and a lower center of gravity combine to provide the 2021 BMW M440 a highly dynamic driving experience. The 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six produces 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. BMW claims the M440i can reach 60 mph in 4.3 seconds thanks to an eight-speed automatic transmission that powers all four wheels.

The M440i is equipped with unique M Sport 18-inch wheels with run-flat tires, the M Sport suspension, and rear differential. A faux-leather wrapped interior, a rear spoiler, and more. A convertible variant is also available, although adding the soft-top body style to the base price extra about $8000.

It’s a lot of fun to smash on the gas and let the eight-speed automatic find the best gear for full torque, with a little kick in the back while upshifting under hard acceleration. Moreover, the EPA rates the M440i xDrive at 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, which I quickly met and rarely exceeded.

The 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, which can provide tiny power boosts but is mostly intended to improve overall performance and increase stop-start capabilities, is essential for this efficiency. The standard seating capacity is four, while the trunk capacity is less spacious than the 3-series, especially in the convertible edition. Still, the coupe model can accommodate five carry-on bags, one less than the 3-series sedan.

BMW claims to boost efficiency or control the car’s electronic systems during hard acceleration. According to the automaker, the automatic stop-start feature will switch off the engine while the driver is braking for a stop if the speed drops below 9 mph.

The M Sport Package adds performance-enhancing features such as the Adaptive M Suspension and Variable Sport steering, which, according to BMW, responds to changes in steering angle to improve cornering agility and low-speed comfort. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and in-dash navigation will all be standard while onboard Wi-Fi, a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, and a wireless smartphone charging pad are optional extras.
