Review

The 2021 BMW Alpina B7 diverges from what we’ve come to expect from high-performance versions of regular BMW models. Typically, BMW’s M Division vehicles tune up the engines to ludicrous outputs and tighten the handling to provide a race-car-like feel. Still, Alpina seems to believe that the German automaker’s executive sedans have more to give, and we agree.

The new B7 is the epitome of this concept, and while its twin-turbo V8 provides a whopping 600 horsepower, it’s the car’s sheer luxury and comfort that stands out. It gives the luxury sedan the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. The vehicle’s maximum speed is limited to 130 mph in standard form and 205 mph with performance tires and a higher top-speed limiter.

The sedan is ideally engineered for city living, with unparalleled ride comfort and cabin opulence. When given a chance to flex its muscles, it is always capable of being playful. Although these custom BMWs might not be as famous in the United States, we wouldn’t be surprised if that changes as the already impressive B7 refines its elegance year after year.

The B7 comes with BMW’s iDrive 7.0 infotainment system, which includes Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, as well as HD Radio and Sirius XM satellite radio.  All these are controlled by a wide 10.25-inch touchscreen display that also supports voice commands and gesture controls.

The sound system comes standard with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon setup, but a lavish 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system can offer $3,400. A wireless charging pad and two USB ports are included as standard. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with Alpina-specific colouring is included in addition to the central display.

2021 BMW ALPINA B7 Interior

The Alpina B7 is an absolute pleasure to drive. It feels much better than BMW’s standard value models of 2021. Despite its power, the sedan appears to prioritize comfort, as it easily smooths over rough and bumps roads, even in the Sport mode. Thanks to the self-levelling air suspension and Dynamic Damper Control.

Generally, such floaty cars struggle when attempting athletic manoeuvres, but the Bimmer manages sharp turns admirably for its weight. The craftsmanship is impeccable, the materials used are all luxurious, and there is plenty of space to enjoy it. The current appearance is not too opulent, but it is simple and elegant.

No matter where you sit inside the prestigious car, you will never be short on space. Headroom is acceptable in both rows, and although it isn’t remarkable, it should be enough for even tall adults.

Even in the luxury segment, many performance-oriented vehicles treat the trunk as an afterthought, but the Alpina B7 refuses to fall short in any way. When you open the trunk door, you’ll find 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space, which is more than sufficient. The hands-free control lid makes access a zipper, and the aperture makes loading and unloading a breeze. However, since there are no rear folding seats, you will never carry more than the specified capacity.

The lack of modern paddle-shifters is the only notable drawback. The Alpina, on the other hand, uses unique gear-shift buttons on the steering wheel. However, you’ll almost certainly never need them because the automatic transmission works more admirably when left to its own devices.
