Review

The 2021 BMW 5 Series hits all the lines for mid-size luxury buyers. Its cabin is more luxurious for long journeys and road trips, especially when equipped with comforts such as massaging seats. There are quite a few of them. Meanwhile, it offers five trim levels with four different engine options, ranging from a sporty turbo four-cylinder to a powerful twin-turbo V-8; a plug-in hybrid is also available for those who want to go green.

The base 530i comes with a punchy turbo-4 in rear-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. A seamless 8-speed automatic transmission is as impressive as the adaptive suspension, which reads the nuances of the road improves good driving while reducing careless driving. The 530e transforms the base sedan into a more powerful plug-in hybrid this year, though the electric range remains 20 miles.

The mild-hybrid system in the 540i improves the turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-6 while coasting and shuts it off to recapture power, boosting fuel economy by 2 mpg to 27 mpg combined, just 1 mpg less than the 530i. Put all-wheel drive on, and you’ll cross 60 mph in only 4.6 seconds. The M550i’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 is faster, and it comes with an upgraded M suspension that includes a lower ride height, increased grip on wider tires, and other performance features. The 617-horsepower M5 Competition, which accelerates to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, is for those who want the full M treatment.
