Review

The turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine in the 2021 Audi SQ5, regardless of trim, produces 349 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is used to control the AWD system. With a bit of a growl emerging from the exhaust, Audi’s V6 engine produces steady and unbroken power. We favor the Audi eight-speed over the Mercedes nine-speed in terms of smoothness. However, BMW’s tuning on the identical ZF unit remains the benchmark, in our opinion. A standard eight-speed automatic transmission can manage up to 85 percent of torque sent to the rear wheels by a Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Both the X3 M40i and the GLC43 like to yell their six-cylinder engines, so we wish the SQ5 would let its hair down a little more. There’s a smidgeon of turbo lag low in the RPM range, but the V6 gets up to speed swiftly. In traffic, Audi’s eight-speed automatic works flawlessly, blending into the background without being obtrusive. When asked, the transmission makes quick shifts and even performs a minor throttle blip on downshifts.

As you’d expect from an Audi, the SQ5’s interior is magnificently constructed, with all the comforts you’d expect from a luxury car and more. Tri-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display are standard features.

2021 Audi SQ5 Interior

There’s a lot of space in the car, and the view out is spectacular. As usual, the construction quality is excellent, and everything is arranged ergonomically. The SQ5’s interior is as lovely as its exterior, with a mix of leather and suede offset by aluminum, optional carbon fiber, and soft-touch plastics. The SQ5 provides 25.8 cubic feet of room behind the second row in its standard configuration, which is enough space for the entire family to effortlessly pack luggage for a week away from the city.

In every arrangement, the SQ5 is solely a five-seater, with no option for the third row. The SQ5 stresses rear seat comfort above cargo space among its tiny competitors, providing a generous 38 inches of legroom for second-row passengers. As a result, the back seat of the SQ5 is more spacious than the BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC.

Both rows have plenty of legroom, with a minimum of 37.7 inches in the back with the sunroof and up to 39.6 inches in the front without it. The seats of the second row also recline slightly, for enhanced rear-seat comfort. In addition, the high seating position provides a good view from the driver’s seat, and the power-adjustable front sport seats are comfy and supportive.

The new Audi Touch MMI infotainment system is a joy to operate. The 10.1-inch touchscreen is snappy and smartphone-oriented, replacing the traditional rotary controller with four corner buttons. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard features, with the former providing wireless connectivity. Unfortunately, navigation is only available on the Prestige trim level and is a $1,500 option on the lower trim levels.

Should I Buy a 2021 Audi SQ5?

The 2021 Audi SQ5 has a reasonable price of $52,900, but it can quickly become expensive. That’s why we’d go for the midrange Premium Plus trim, which starts at $57,300. Then we’d add the $1,600 for the 21-inch wheels and Black Optic Package, $595 for some beautiful Ultra Blue metallic paint, $600 for the warm weather package with heated and ventilated seats, and $1,500 for navigation. As a result, the SQ5 would cost $62,690 as specified, which is roughly $10,000 less than our Prestige trim test car.
