Review

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is a midsize four-door sedan designed to compete with the Toyota Camry, the Honda Accord, and the Hyundai Sonata, as well as Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu. Volkswagen aimed to make the Passat the most American VW constructed of any automobile. This was planned for Americans, released as a 2012 model, and is built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at a sparkling new assembly plant.

The new 1.8-liter turbocharged gasoline engine produces 170 horsepower, equal to the five-cylinder engine, and 184 pound-feet torque, all at a lower rpm than the five-cylinder engine. The turbo Passat is manually shifting to an estimated 24/34 mpg City/Highway fuel economy of EPA, 2-3 mpg more than the 5-cylinder outgoing one.

The turbocharged TDI diesel in the market segment provides an estimated EPA fuel economy of 31/43 mpg, manually transmitted City / Highway. The Passat 3.6L is standard with a DSG and 400-watt VW-exclusive sound system from Fender. Leather and navigation and other semi-luxury features are available, the sunroof and keyless pressing start-stop.

Without soft and well-tuned for American inter-states, we find Passat ride consistency comfortable. Many drivers expect to handle a middle-size mainstream sedan: predictable and forgiving, perfect for routine commuting in and out.

Fit and finish with tight tolerances and quality materials is the Teutonic feel. There is nothing flashy,  functional controls, and easy-to-read gauges transmitting data. In some higher-priced cars, the alternate wood grain looks better than the real wood.

A six-month, full-fee evaluation of the connected utilities VW Car-Net included in the Wolfsburg edition is also new for the 2014 VW Passat. The security/comfort feature includes automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, stolen car tracking support, remote access to vehicles, and boundary/speed warnings.

2014 Volkswagen Passat Interior

When the most common feature on launching a new car is the rear-seat legroom, it is understandable that the envelope was not pressed for refreshing the car’s interior. This is the case for Passat nowadays. With a huge round analog tachometer and speedometer, the instrument panel’s gauge cluster is delightfully basic. Each one has an embedded small circular gauge, a coolant temperature control, and another fuel.

We find that the navigation system is slow to operate and hard to study. We spent 45 minutes in New York City trying to find out how to program an address. The concern was that the system was designed to avoid toll roads that turned Manhattan into a 90-minute ride in 30 minutes. If only we heard about it. Even to get rid of the old targets, the system has to go into the Memory feature. It should be perfect after it has been learned, but the driver must continue to act very slowly. The navigation system will start indefinitely after starting the car.

The front seats are comfortable, both base and sport, and the Sport provides a smidgen of appreciated lateral support.  The center of audio/navigation, temperature-control interfaces holds to the previous Passat’s configuration, with audio/navigation panels above and a trio of large button control settings below. Two smaller knobs on the lower corner and below a vertical set of four buttons on both sides of the display compose the stereo controls and the very competent navigation system.

This screen displays the different menus of sensitive buttons, all of which work as well as any of our fingers. (We could not test the simple model system.) Visibility is fine; the front is stronger than the back.  The glove box is refreshingly spacious though it is plastic. There is a magazine pouch for any front seatback.

The 2014 Passat is a literal oasis of space for those who are searching for a big cabin. There is plenty of legroom and headroom for front passengers and an opportunity for back passengers to expand and ride comfortably.
