Review

A four-door, five-passenger sedan, designed exclusively for mainstream American car buyers, the amazing 2012 Volkswagen Passat. The new Passat is redesigned and launched with competitive pricing at a Volkswagen assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which opened its doors in 2011. Volkswagen intended to make the Passat the most American car design.VW achieved, to a large extent, maybe too well in specific ways.

The first eye-catching feature of the Passat 2012 is its price, with its base Passat 2.5L S starting at $19,995, even the aggressively priced and sold Hyundai Sonata,  which will open for $20,145, lower than any of its main competitors. The new Passat, however, provides some unexpected features in this basic model, including automatic dual-zone climate control and Bluetooth connectivity. A GPS-based touch-screen navigation system is available on Passat 2,5L SE. Additional features of this system are required, but the price is $26,795.

When we drove the new Passat, it was comfortable to drive without being soft, well-tuned to American states. Most people expect handling from a mid-size car like it is on the inside and outside of the daily commute, predictable and accepting.

Nothing incredibly unique is understated, but the current Passat’s style has many design markings that differentiate from something imported from Japan or Detroit. Its visual proportions somewhat obscure its interior rooms, where it claims to be significant in a rear seat leg area.

The Teutonic feel is fit and finishes with strong tolerances and materials of consistency. There are reliable, functional controls, and easy-to-read indicators that convey the vehicle’s essential mechanical and electronic data.   There is decent visibility, but the back is somewhat blockage due to the standard three rear-seat head restraints.
